Five Years Ago

Five years ago I was getting school lunches ready when the phone rang and a friend asked if I had turned on the television yet. It was on for the rest of the day, and for many days after. 9/11 was an incredibly sad day, and its memory has been made sadder still by the way our President has used it as a pretext to divide the country and justify horrible and destructive policies at home and abroad. What could have been a transformative moment for positive change in the world has been squandered and lost. Such a shame.

My heart and soul aches at the direction our country has taken both domestically and internationally since 9/11/01.

Around the world daily terrorist attacks are a way of life in many countries. Hunger, famine, disease, and persecution are faced each day by millions of others around the globe.

In the face of this, how do I put what happened in the United States on 9/11/01 into perspective for my children? (One of whom saw the second plane go into the second tower live "real time" on the Today Show from the place we were staying at the Wisconsin Dells that week.)

I'm at a loss.
