I just heard Senator John Warner (R-VA) ask General Petraeus if the surge was making America safer. Petraeus said that he believed he was pursuing the right strategy to achieve the military aims in Iraq but he didn't know whether it was making America safer. I thought that was an astonishing statement from a top general in our military.
