Another Episcopalian Milestone

At their national meeting in Columbus, Ohio, Episcopalians elected their first woman as presiding bishop of the American church. Nevada Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori was elected on the fifth ballot out of seven candidates. She was the only female in the field. She has only been a priest for twelve years. Prior to that she was an oceanogropher; she became a priest after federal funding for her job dried up and she was asked to fill in at her local church.

Her election will probably further rile the world-wide Anglican community already upset about the American church's election three years ago of Gene Robinson as the first openly gay bishop of the American church. Much of the world-wide Anglican community does not recognize the ordination of women as valid.

Good for the Episcopalians and congratulations to Bishop Jefferts Schori.
